Traveling is rejuvenating: new sights to behold, food to dine on, and activities that revive the spirit. But for the exercise enthusiast, it also means losing one's workout routine. Long flights, jam-packed schedules, and delicious local fare are all too often excuses not to exercise.
The best part: Staying active on the road is not that hard to accomplish. A bit of pre-trip planning and out-of-the-box thinking, and you can keep your body active, energy high, and goals on track, no matter where you travel.
With Camp Fitness Studio, you know that fitness isn't something that happens in four walls. It's a way of life that goes with you. Here are a few ways you can keep that energy up while traveling:
Plan in advance for how and where you will remain active prior to your vacation. Check to see if your hotel or local center has a fitness center. Without it, bring along some space-saving items like resistance bands, a jump rope, or a yoga mat. These will take up minimal space, are simple to transport, and can make any location (your hotel room, a park bench, anywhere) your own gym.
You can also buy exercise videos or apps that don't involve any equipment. A 20-minute guided workout in the morning before eating breakfast can be the perfect way to begin your entire day.
Gym out of your price range? Think twice. Your body is the only piece of equipment you truly need. Bodyweight exercises work all of the major muscle groups and can be done anywhere: hotel room to beach.
Here's a fast, full-body travel workout you may consider doing:
Do three rounds, and you'll have a strong session that boosts your heart rate and gets your muscles popping, all in under 20 minutes.
One of the best parts about traveling is exploring, so make your workout part of that adventure! Go for a morning run by the beach, hike a nearby trail, or rent a bike to see the city. You’ll get a great workout while soaking in the sights.
Even just walking more helps. Skip the cab and explore on foot. You’ll easily hit your step count without feeling like you’re exercising.
Travel days can be long and sedentary, so find little ways to move. Stretch in your hotel room, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or walk around the airport during layovers. When your routine is derailed, consistency is most crucial: being active, even at a low level, keeps you going and sharp.
Don't worry if your travel days don't permit you to have full workouts. Be forgiving and make adjustments. Maybe one day you've only 10 minutes to play with. No problem! Replace long sessions with mini-sprints, or focus on mobility and flexibility instead of strength.
Remember that something is always better than nothing. A quick exercise keeps your body in balance and has you looking and feeling wonderful.
Food is the best part of traveling, and you should indulge! Just be in balance. Eat fresh, local foods, add protein where you can, and get your veggies in.
Stay hydrated too, especially when flying or out and about. Carry a refillable bottle so that you can drink all day long. Your body will thank you.
Traveling is hard on your body. Rest as much as you can so that you recharge and heal. Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep nightly.
In addition, some light stretching, some yoga, or a brief meditation can wind you down after a grueling day of sightseeing.
Exercise isn't disappearing because you're mobile; it just appears a little different. By being open-minded and taking the time to plan, you can stay strong, healthy, and active wherever life leads.
